The North American leafhopper Scaphoideus titanus Ball 1932 is the main vector of Flavescence dorée phytoplasma affecting many grape growing areas in Europe. The paper presents the results of three-year survey (2016-2018) regarding the distribution and population density of S. titanus in vineyards showing symptoms characteristic to yellows diseases from the wine-growing regions Banat, Crişana and Maramureş Hills in the Western Romania. The vine plantations investigated were generated under the reconversion and restructuring program in viticulture in Romania with planting material from western European countries and Romania. The yellow sticky traps technique was employed to capture the insects. The leafhopper S. titanus was present in all surveyed vine plantations. Its population abundances differed between plantations and years. Vines with symptoms characteristic to yellows diseases were detected in 64% of surveyed vine plantations. The data gathered in this study offer useful information and constitute an important step forward in assessing the phytosanitary risk of the leafhopper in the vineyards from Romania.
